Try that in Ireland. I’ll bet you that pint we know what you’ll get…

I wouldn't bet against you! Do you miss the country, Bill?

I really find it staggering how people stick to using such poorly defined Imperial units , but I guess it’s a matter of familiarity

Indeed. Old habits die hard, or something. Once something is so ingrained in you, it's hard to change. And it only gets worse as you get older.

and as long as the glass is full and the same size as the ones other people have, I won’t be complaining!

Said like a true pragmatist. Cheers, Tom.

Well, in Ireland I just order by the brand - "A Guinness Please" and as long as the glass is full and the same size as the ones other people have, I won't be complaining!

I really find it staggering how people stick to using such poorly defined Imperial units , but I guess it's a matter of familiarity and probably it's only really people like me reading Mathematical Physics who would take issue :)

How is a mile exactly defined? - briefly looking suggests they aren't that well defined (i.e roman feet) and I don't really find that satisfactory;.

SI units don't have such problems - the metre is defined as distance travelled by light in time 3.3367x10-9 s (reciprocal of speed of light). The kilogram is defined as the mass of a 90%/10% platinum:iridium cylinder of height and diameter 39.17mmm , known as the international prototype kilogram.Similar SI base units are defined carefully as such and are generally used.

"Can I have a pint please?" Try that in Ireland. I'll bet you that pint we know what you'll get... (except maybe in County Cork, but even there odds are 50/50...)

“can I have a pint please” is an interesting phrase because surely it only ever happens in the soaps where they can’t mention a brand.

Or if you're a regular and the bar staff know exactly what you would like a pint of.

"can I have a pint please" is an interesting phrase because surely it only ever happens in the soaps where they can't mention a brand. A pint of what?

But for some reason it is the exemplar phrase, Like "Play it again, Sam", never said in reality but it has become the de facto standard.

now it is very confusing mix over here.

It's good to hear we're not the only ones then!

catties and taels prevail

I'm assuming they're units of measurement? *Ollie goes off to check...* Ah, Chinese measurement of weight. Google says 1 catty (kan) = 0.60478982 kilograms.

when it comes to drinks, you can still get the pint here

Good to hear, wouldn't want you getting all confused. Not at least until the seventh pint, anyway! :D

well, I grew up very metric and then moved to Hong Kong that those 14 years ago was slowly beginnig to switch from imperial to metric. all of a sudden thanks to the line of work I had to get used to feet and inches, now I have to think dual

now it is very confusing mix over here. generally the whole place is metric, except property where areas are still quoted in square feet.

wet markets are totally different stroy, catties and taels prevail :-) , supermarkets mix those catties, taels with ounces and kilos ... everything goes :-)

pants, etc

Is giggling like a school child because I didn't realise snowers had to wear special pants. :D

But you know…once you get cruisin’…ollie-ing (pun intended)…jumping…sliding…there’s nothing that beats the feeling.

I'm totally sure of that as well - it's like most sports; hard to get going, but then once going, you just can't stop.

I have to confirm, Ollie, that snowboarding is CRAZY expensive! Equipment, indeed! And even the little gators that cover your neck, the jackets, pants, etc. in addition to the hard goods (board, bindings, boots) totally add up! I have to admit that if I didn't already know how to board, the expense would definitely deter me today.

But you know...once you get cruisin'...ollie-ing (pun intended)...jumping...sliding...there's nothing that beats the feeling. My opinion on skiing vs. boarding is, snowboarding has a tougher learning curve in the beginning. Skiing is extra hard to get advanced at. :)
